Greenwashing refers to the presentation of false claims or misleading information to build consumer or investor confidence about the environmental practices of a company, product, or service. It occurs when firms or institutions promote themselves, their products, services, or investments as sustainable or environment-friendly when, in reality, they are not undertaking any green initiatives or may even be harming the environment. Such practices may deceive investors and consumers into believing that the company is green-conscious.
